Howdy everyone,
Did everybody have a
safe and scary Halloween? The Gold Point spirits were very quite this
year. We had two guests spend Thursday night and were disappointed that
they were not visited. Maybe next year.
Not much to report
on this issue. Unless, you consider the fact that if I make it till
Tuesday I'll be 51 years young. According to my Virginia City gypsy
fortune teller that leaves me with 35 more years to go. Among other
prophecies I was told I would always have my health and never be rich.
This and a lot more was foretold to me back in the early eighties and
has held true to this day. Now I'm very "rich" in friends, but I'm sure
she was talking about money.
Let's start off with
hoping everyone has a very warm and thankful Thanksgiving at the end of
the month. Here at Gold Point we have our Thanksgiving dinner the
Friday after. This allows everyone to enjoy the company of family and
relatives on Thursday and then to come visit us and have dinner with us
on Friday. We are having a turkey and ham dinner with all the fixins
around 3 o'clock. We are asking for a $10 donation. At this time we
still have a couple of cabins available if you wish to spend the night.
So we can properly plan on having enough food for everyone we ask that
you please confirm by Friday, November 22nd. This is not a big full
blown party like the other holidays up here. Not even a band. It's
just people getting together and having a good time and good
conversation and getting away from home for a while and experiencing
something different.
The player
piano has been picked up by Ken owner
of
www.ragtimewest.com, for fixin.
He is going
to beef it up a little to handle the weather up here better and add a
new computer to it that will have a program to play 1000 songs without
stopping. To remind everyone, it's a 1915 Remington. Originally a
player piano. Ken converted it to a Nickelodeon type in 1999.
Speaking of the
weather. So many of our visitors have asked about the annual rainfall
here in Gold Point country so I've done some research. I have found out
that Nevada is the driest state in the union with a average annual
rainfall of about 7 inches. The driest part of Nevada is, you guessed
it, Southwestern Esmeralda County. We have an average rainfall of only
3 inches. Last year was below average and so far this year we are below
that. There's a rumor from the animals around here that winter is going
to be colder than last year. They didn't mention anything about the
snowfall yet.
Alan Patera is 2
years into writing a historical and informative book on Gold Point.
I have recently been informed by Alan that he has collected the information and is going to spend the winter putting down words on paper for a possible spring release. He is also planning on a book signing during our 2nd Annual Fireman's Benefit and Chili Cook-off next Memorial Day Weekend.
Our friend Gil has
donated some stock certificates of local mines in and around the area.
He has also left a binder full of stock certificates for sale. The most
interesting and most expensive one is from the Tonopah Gold Mountain
Mining Company, incorporated under the laws of Arizona, dated the
seventh day of October, 1902 and signed by Jim Butler. He is asking
$200 for it. The rest are around the $10 to $20 range.
Work has been very
slow on the Radkie House. Yesterday we finally got started on putting
up the 1 x 4 spruce wainscot in the bedroom. We have the bedroom
wallpaper up already. Because having to leave for work we don't have
much time to spend on it. We hope to have it done though by spring.
Sooner if anyone can get Bill Gates to donate his pocket change. lol.
Happy Holidays to
you all till next time.
Happy Trails and
Sunsets,
Sheriff Stone
